History of Chicago
The city of Chicago was founded in 1832 but the first settler in the city was an African American man named Jean Baptiste Point DuSable who came around 1780. Chicago was a major transportation hub by the 1850s with the construction of railroads. The city had become the nation's trans-shipment and warehousing center by 1860 and, many factories where created. Chicago was the nation's second largest city and one of the largest cities in the world by 1870. Chicago had grown from 4,000 to over 90,000 people within 20 years. The city had become the center of the nation's advertising industry along with New York.
History of Bronzeville
Bronzeville was known as the "Black Metropolis" in the early 20th century which was one of the nation's significant landmarks of the urban history of African Americans. During he peak of the Great Migration thousands of African Americans fled from the injustice in the south and emigrated to Chicago in the search of industrial jobs. Bronzeville had African American musicians, businessmen, entrepreneurs , politicians, and millionaires. It was an area where African American businesses were formed and they prospered. Many African American famous people helped the develop the neighborhood. Businesses closed and many African Americans moved south after World War II because of the elimination of restricted housing covenants. The result of this was almost one-third of Bronzeville's housing stocks became vacant or abandoned. Bronzeville is south of the CBD.
